Case Study: Manyavar Kanyamaan Campaign Controversy (2021)
In September 2021, Manyavar, a prominent ethnic wear brand, launched its "Kanyamaan" campaign starring Alia Bhatt. The campaign aimed to highlight gender equality during traditional Indian wedding rituals, but it quickly became the center of a nationwide debate.
“When marketing aims to redefine deeply rooted societal traditions, creative teams must balance progressive ideals with community sentiment.”
1. Reimagining Traditions
The commercial questioned the age-old ritual of *Kanyadaan* (giving away the daughter) and suggested replacing it with *Kanyamaan* (honoring the daughter). While many lauded the progressive message, conservative viewers accused the brand of targeting ancient customs for commercial gain.
This is categorized as **SR-02 (Mitigation of Sacred Symbolism / Ritual Redirection)**. The backlash demonstrated that altering traditional rituals in brand campaigns is a high-risk creative path.
2. Lessons Learned
Unlike other recalled campaigns, Manyavar kept the ad active. However, the controversy created significant public division. For brands, this shows that social campaigns require comprehensive testing across multiple demographics to evaluate whether the message is polarizing or constructive.
