Case Study: Zomato Kachra Campaign Controversy (2023)

Backlash Threat Score

In June 2023, on World Environment Day, food delivery giant Zomato released a recycling-themed campaign video. The ad featured actor Aditya Lakhia, reprising his famous role as "Kachra" (which literally translates to "garbage" in Hindi) from the classic film *Lagaan*.

“Using literal translations of character names associated with historically marginalized communities to represent trash is an absolute socio-cultural failure mode.”

1. The Metaphorical Failure

The video depicted Lakhia's character being used as various items like a table, a lamp, and paper to promote Zomato's recycling initiative. Although Zomato intended to create a clever recycling metaphor, it completely ignored the historical and societal context of the character "Kachra", who represented a marginalized caste.

This represents a high-severity **SR-03 (Classist / Caste Sensitivity Violation)**. The campaign's reduction of a marginalized character to literal garbage sparked severe public outrage and led to immediate cancellation of the ad.

2. Corporate Takeaway

The video was deleted within hours and Zomato released an official apology. The campaign highlights that creative teams must evaluate the cultural connotations of movie characters, metaphors, and names before using them as direct analogies in public advertising campaigns.
